Once i went in there and got talking to the dude stacking the racks, and he started piling on all these records, i took about 50 to the listening post! I ended up buying about 30 of them which totalled £198!! I had it bad back then :D

Where i went record shopping there was 2 blinding record shops and HMV and Virgin in Oxford Street, i never had enough money to buy all the records i wanted so i had to chose wisely.

It used to surprise some of the stuff HMV and Virgin had and cheaper than anywhere else, a record in Choci's was £5 or £6 was £3 or £4 in HMV or Virgin. It used to make me feel guilty for not buying in a independant shop.

I used to get all my full release ones from HMV, like tidy, nukleuz, rock hard, tinrib, mohawk, bulletproof etc... all used to be between £3.99 and £5.99 instead of £6.99 elsewhere!

regarding the initial question on how hard cd mixing is, on many fronts its easier than vinyl, as you dont have to readjust the needle. hot cues and wide pitch range, stuff like that all makes it easier to control the music.
vinyl guys call it a sham but seriously, you seen ferry, armin, and paul van dyke, the modern deities of trance? theyre all rocking the mk3s. |

Made the transition from Vinyl to CDJ's about 12 months back - I use a combination of both these days
Personally I prefer CDJ's to vinyl, mainly down to the ease you can get tracks now - Something i thought i would never say!!!! Vinyl is alot more forgiving, i find with CDJ's you pick up every little discrepancy, which is made worse when you screw up a mix (does happen sometimes to the best of us!) |

CD mixing and Vinyl mixing are essentially the same, the skill transfers over. As long as you know to beat match and what you're doing, it doesn't take long to get accustomed to the CDJ's as you're basically doing the same thing.
And for the Vinyl aficionados, have you ever looked into Serato, or Traktor or things of the like? I personally use a DVS to mix, allows me to still have the feel or vinyl and turntables all while playing mp3 (given that it is routed through a PC). I still periodically buy vinyls, but only when I have the excess cash to spare. I also had the pleasure of using a Numark NS7, and it is very much up there and does get major bang for its buck. While the platters are smaller, it's essentially the same thing but much more compact and I'd highly recommend it for anyone. |

I think theres alot of difference between cd's and vinyl i grew up with vinyl and i still love them to this day but it pains me to say this and i never thought i would but i now think mp3's are miles better i got my cdj's about a year ago and its one of the best things i done the sound quilty is a hell of alot better on mp3's, im in to trance big time and on a vinyl in the break down theres always a crackle or a pop when it should be silent were as on mp3 its how it should be compleat silent's thats why nearly every top dj use cdj insted of vinyl i no some people will disagree with that point but im a serious clubber and iv not seen any decent dj use vinyl for a while (apart from eddie halliwell but thats just for scratching nothing else). And as for the mixing side of it theres not alot of difference at all mate iv got vinyl and cdj's and i can assure you theres no button on the cdj's that you can press that beat match it for you you've got to do it just like vinyl, as for the bpm counters there on most decent mixers anyway its just there for a guide if you want to look at it its up to you i personally don't use them id rather do it buy ear coz thats why i got in to mixing in the first place. The only true down side to mp3 is vinyl hunting, i was addicted to it from a young age i used to go all over england just to look for some tunes and it was i proper buzz when you find an old gem youve been looking for for years, but now to be honest theres not alot of decent record shops about i went last month with my mate and came home with 4 tunes and i ended up gettin bored. This is just my opinion and i no alot of people will disagree. |

I only disagree on the part where you said mp3's are better sound quality than vinyl..... errrr no chance lol. Yes you get crackles and pops etc if scrtched or not cleaned, but still sounds warmer and smoother. Mp3's are compressed audio which lowers the sound quality (although a lot of people wouldn't notice).
I can usually tell the difference by listening between dc, mp3 and vinyl. Anyways i agree with everything else lol! |

Re: How easy is CD mixing.
i was a total vinyl head, ive always used vinyl and though that cd mixin was kind of cheating the art of real djing and real skill but a friend of mine brought cd mixers and i was very quick to tell him what a fool he had been and he said i didnt know what i was talking bout and just give them a try so to prove my point i did, and actually there not that bad. of course i still own my vinyl but now i do want a cd mixin as well ;) so i guess it depends on the person

Re: How easy is CD mixing.
Have a mate who's recently bought some CDJ900's and a DJM700 - he's finding the transition from vinyl hard at the mo - just cant get to grip with all the features and new posibilities he now has - trying to "teach" him at the moment but i dont want to sound patronising or condescending to someone who can mix perfectly well on Vinyl
I struggled like f##k in the beginning, but after a few months i got my head around them & haven't looked back - I still use Vinyl but not half as much as i maybe could or should do - i always make sure that when im doing classics sets i use vinyl ![]() Had the unfortunate experience of using some Technics SLDL1200's the other week - probably a perfectly good deck but in my opinion what a piece of shit |
