Menno de Jong Interview

Menno de Jong is a dj and producer from the Netherlands. His production & remix career has seen him record for some of Europe’s biggest trance labels and he’s the owner of lauded Dutch independent Intuition Recordings. A Podcast pioneer, he’s produced and presented the much respected and widely-syndicated Intuition Radio show for the last 3 years. As a DJ he’s closed gigs for Tiesto & Paul Van Dyk, is currently ranked at No. 48 in DJMag’s Top 100 Chart and has spun in over 25 countries.
Having now spun in over 25 countries, Menno has played at clubs and events such as Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, Creamfields, Trance Energy, Sensation White, Mysteryland, Amnesia in Ibiza, Love Parade in Berlin, The Gaudi Arena in Moscow & WMC in Miami. Alongside that he has DJ’d with the likes of Tiësto, Armin Van Buuren, The Prodigy, Paul van Dyk, Marco V and Markus Schulz.
Menno was also at the leading-edge of the internet radio and podcasting phenomenon, launching his Intuition Radio show in 2005. The weekly episodes rapidly became required listening for the internet’s trance-hungry hoards, with Menno showcasing the very best in EDM. The show has now gone monthly and progressed onto the airwaves of XMRadio Dutch national
SLAM! FM & Worldspace with tens of thousands of listeners tuning in each week. The Intuition Podcast is also available as a download via iTunes.

Interview

Dan Daly:
Growing up in Holland amongst some of the biggest djs and producers, who would have been your favorites?

Menno de Jong:
My favorites included Tiesto and Ferry Corsten. I also listened to guys such as Oliver Lieb, M.I.K.E. / Push, Moby and many many more.

Dan Daly:
Looking through your tour dates, it seems your playing all around the world from the to the USA, is there any place in particular that stands out for you in terms of atmosphere?

Menno de Jong:
Fortunately, I rarely walk out of a gig unimpressed by the crowd there, places that are truly unique include Buenos Aires (where you'll find the crowd sits down during the break of a track they especially like, and jump up when the climax hits), California (the level of energy at festivals there is spectacular, the crowd goes absolutely bananas) and Poland (massive Trance scene with extremely well produced events and a very enthusiastic crowd).

Dan Daly:
Was being a world class dj/producer something you had in the back of your mind as a child or were you interested in a different career?

Menno de Jong:
I always had a love for EDM, but as a child I obviously wasn't as aware of the whole DJ scene as much as when I was a teenager. Funnily enough I found myself accidentally attending the Love Parade at the age of 10 when I lived in Berlin for a while due to my fathers work. It was pretty surreal, I had never seen something like it before and it certainly sparked my interest!
In my teenage years my dream to become a professional DJ and Producer truly developed, I started attending parties, practicing DJing and Producing non-stop and soon couldn't think of anything else I'd rather do in my life.

Dan Daly:
What was your first bit of dj kit you ever bought?

Menno de Jong:
At the age of 15 I spent the entire summer working in a supermarket to buy a second-hand 10 year old belt-drive DJ setup with headphones and a pair of Ortofon-S needles.

Dan Daly:
What trance track did you hear and say 'Yes, I definitely want to produce music like that'?

Menno de Jong:
Push-Strange World (2000 Remake) played by Tiesto at Dutch Dimension on Queensnight many, many years ago.

Dan Daly:
You have an Intuition podcast now, how is that going for you?

Menno de Jong:
It's going very well, I am really enjoying the enhanced content (pictures, links to where the tracks can be purchased, info about the track currently playing) you can put in.
With about 10,000 downloads per month the podcast has attained a very solid listener base. On the radio front there are also some interesting developments taking place, the frequency of the Podcast might be going up, as well as it returning to the airwaves as a radio show!

Dan Daly:
What are you most proud of in your music career?

Menno de Jong:
Establishing my label, events and radio brand Intuition.

Dan Daly:
Have you any favorite vst's that you use to create your sounds?

Menno de Jong:
There are a couple that I particularly like! The Spectrasonics Omnisphere is amazing for very realistic and dynamic sounds, the MiniMonsta is great for bass sounds (it\'92s a very good Moog emulator), the Sylenth is great for lead sounds, pads and the occasional bass and Battery is my go-to VST for drums and percussion programming.
I also still use the Virus Ti a lot, the perfect all-round digital analog synth in any studio; it's really used in more tracks than you'd think in various genres!

Dan Daly:
Finally, what can we see from Menno de Jong in the near future?

Menno de Jong:
I'm about to embark on a 2 week tour of North America in May and upon my return everything will evolve my upcoming mixalbum Intuition Sessions Volume 2: Ipanema. There's a whole interesting story behind the project and I'm working very hard to make it another lovely package. I hope you'll check it out when it is released in June!
